Yesterday, civil justice advocates gathered at the state capitol to urge legislators and Governor Andrew Cuomo to fix the only-in-New York Scaffold Law, and highlight the law’s impact on taxpayers and local governments.
The lobby day presented an opportunity for the coalition to unveil new branding, a new website, and, most importantly, new legislation sponsored by Assemblyman John McDonald.
This year, municipal costs were the focus of the lobby day’s morning briefing. Attendees were addressed by Wade Beltramo of the New York Conference of Mayors (NYCOM), who described the devastating costs that municipalities face, which are in turn passed down to every taxpayer in the state. Following NYCOM’s address, Assemblyman McDonald, who is also a small businessman and former mayor, took the podium to announce his new legislation – stressing the states fast-declining competitive advantage.
After the morning session, attendees split up into regional groups to share their stories with legislators and educate them on the issue. Many lawmakers, expressed support for reform, and those opposed to change heard loud and clear from our supporters about why the Scaffold Law must be fixed.
We would like to thank everyone who attended and our generous sponsors for their help in making this day successful.
Without your contributions, we could not continue to keep our fight strong.
